About the producer
The producer’s co-op CAFESCOR (Cafés Especiales Corquin) is headed by Herminio Perdomo who owns the Alto de los Santos farm. Last May, Francesco and Miguel had the chance to visit the region invited by Herminio to visit some of the farms, the HQ of the cooperative, the wet and the dry mills, and the organic fertilizer production plant where CAFESCOR transform the by-products of coffee into organic fertilizers to be distributed among its farmer members.
For NCR this visit marked an important step towards a more sound and direct relationship with our coffee suppliers. Indeed, during the visit we closed a contract to import our first coffee container directly sourced from CAFESCOR.
About the coffee
This lovely washed arabica is grown in Don Herminio Perdomo’s farm called Finca Alto de los Santos. Here, at an average altitude of 1400mt. he grows mainly Lempira, Caturra, Catuai and Parainema coffee varieties. The production is organic-certified with 50% of the plantation surface with is shaded by native tree species which helps to protect the ecosystem. The plant density is about 3500-4000 plants for ha. that means a low-density production system that reduces the stress on soil and other natural resources. Thanks to this commitment to preserving the environment the co-op can market this coffee as organic and Bird-friendly certified. Furthermore, the wastewaters from coffee processing, highly pollutant if not treated and dumped into the land in high concentration, are treated and used as input to produce organic fertilizers for the Cooperative’s own members.
